Shaheed Minar
Shaheed Minar, formerly known as the Ochterlony Monument, is a historic structure located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It was erected in 1828 in memory of Major-General Sir David Ochterlony, a commander of the British East India Company, to commemorate his successful defense of Delhi against the Marathas in 1804 and the victory over the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese War.
The monument was designed by J. P. Parker and funded by public contributions. Standing at 48 meters (157 feet) high, the Shaheed Minar blends Egyptian, Syrian, and Turkish architectural styles. It features a classical fluted column, a Syrian upper portion, and a Turkish dome, with two balconies at the top.
The monument was famously called the "Cloud-Kissing Monument" by Mark Twain. Visitors can reach the top via a serpentine staircase with 223 steps, offering panoramic views of Kolkata.
