Shivneri

Shivneri is an ancient hill fort located near the town of Junnar in Pune district, Maharashtra, renowned as the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, founder of the Maratha Empire.

The fort, with a distinctive triangular shape and seven strong gates, is surrounded by steep cliffs, providing natural defense and making it historically significant as a military outpost. Its origins date back to at least the 6th century, and over time it was ruled by several dynasties, including the Mauryas, Chalukyas, Yadavas, and later the Delhi Sultanate, Adil Shahis, Mughals, and Marathas.

Inside Shivneri, visitors find historical features such as the small room marking Shivaji’s birthplace, water tanks like Badami Talav, perennial springs called Ganga and Yamuna, statues of Shivaji and his mother Jijabai, and temples dedicated to the goddess Shivai Devi—after whom Shivaji is said to have been named. Today, Shivneri Fort is a popular tourist and trekking destination, drawing both history enthusiasts and adventure seekers, especially from October to March when the climate is most pleasant.
