Sholavaram Lake

Sholavaram Lake, located in Ponneri taluk of Thiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu, is a rain-fed reservoir built in the 19th century during British rule, serving as an important water source for Chennai city. It is connected to Puzhal Lake by canals that help supply drinking water to the region.

The lake area has historical significance as it adjoins a former World War II airstrip, which was later converted into a motor racing track used from the 1960s to the late 1980s before racing moved to a different location. With a capacity of about 20,000 acre-feet (approximately 0.025 cubic kilometers), Sholavaram Lake plays a vital role in regional water management, storing water from monsoons and Krishna River water brought via an inter-state agreement.

The lake is also known for its scenic beauty and is a local spot for picnics and birdwatching. In recent years, efforts have been made to maintain the lake’s capacity through desilting and strengthening its bunds, especially after damage caused by heavy rainfall and cyclones. Despite urbanization pressures, Sholavaram remains a significant ecological and historical landmark near Chennai.
