Shri Koteshwar Mahadev Temple, Gwalior

Shri Koteshwar Mahadev Temple, located in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed to be one of the oldest temples in the region, with a history that traces back centuries. The temple was originally destroyed during the Mughal era under Aurangzeb’s rule, but it was later restored by Saint Dev Maharaj, who recovered the Shiva Lingam and rebuilt the temple to its present form.

The temple is known for its unique sanctum sanctorum, where holy water drips continuously onto the Shiva Lingam from a divine vessel placed above it. This architectural feature enhances the spiritual significance of the temple, creating a deeply devotional atmosphere for worshippers.

Another fascinating aspect of the temple is the presence of colorful paintings on its interior walls, which captivate visitors and add to its aesthetic appeal. Historically, the temple was believed to be protected by divine serpents, which, according to legend, scared away Mughal warriors attempting to destroy it.

Today, it is maintained by the Scindia Devasthan Trust and attracts thousands of devotees, especially during Maha Shivratri, when grand celebrations take place.
