The Shri Vimala Shaktipeeth, also known as the Bimala Temple, is a sacred Hindu temple located within the Jagannath Temple complex in Puri, Odisha. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where devotees worship the divine feminine power. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Vimala or Bimala, who is considered the Tantric consort of Lord Jagannath and a guardian of the temple complex.
The temple is built in the traditional Kalinga architectural style and consists of four main components: Vimana (structure containing the sanctum), Jagamohana (assembly hall), Nata Mandapa (festival hall), and Bhoga Mandapa (hall of offerings). The central icon of Vimala dates back to the 6th century CE, while the present structure was built in the 9th century under the Eastern Ganga dynasty.
One unique aspect of the temple is that food offered to Lord Jagannath does not get sanctified as Mahaprasad until it is also offered to Goddess Vimala. The temple is especially significant during the Durga Puja festival, which is celebrated for sixteen days and culminates with Vijayadashami.
