Sri Sailam, located in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, is a revered pilgrimage site known primarily for the Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva and a Shakti Peetha dedicated to Goddess Bhramaramba (Parvati).
The temple complex, situated atop the sacred Srisaila mountain on the banks of the Krishna River, is notable for its ancient origins, with evidence of worship dating back to at least the 2nd century AD under the Satavahana dynasty. The temple represents an important convergence of Shaivism and Shaktism traditions and has been expanded and maintained by many ruling dynasties, including the Chalukyas, Vijayanagara kings, and others.
According to legend, the site gained sanctity due to events involving Lord Shiva, Parvati, their sons Ganesha and Kartikeya, and is associated with various mythological stories. Architecturally, the temple features Dravidian style with prominent gopurams, intricate sculptures, and inner sanctums housing sacred lingams, including a thousand lingas and five lingas linked to the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. It remains a popular and significant spiritual destination attracting millions of devotees annually.
