The name Dwaraka Tirumala originates from the great saint Dwaraka, who is believed to have discovered the self-manifested idol of Lord Venkateswara after intense penance. The temple complex features a unique sanctum where two idols of Lord Venkateswara are worshipped under the same roof.
One idol is a complete statue installed by Srimad Ramanuja in the 11th century, while the other is a swayambhu (self-manifested) idol, visible only from the bust upwards, with the lower portion believed to extend underground. Devotees believe that worshipping the swayambhu idol grants salvation, while the installed idol represents Dharma, Artha, and Kama.
The temple follows Vaikhanasa Agama traditions, and rituals such as Abhishekam are not performed on the swayambhu idol due to its unique form.
