St Mary's Basilica
St. Mary's Basilica, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption, is a historic Roman Catholic church located in Secunderabad, Telangana. It was originally built as St. Mary's Cathedral and later designated as a minor basilica on November 7, 2008.
The church was established in 1850 by Father Daniel Murphy, who sought a location for a Catholic church during the Nizam’s reign. Due to restrictions on non-Islamic religious structures in Hyderabad at the time, he chose Secunderabad as an alternative site.
The basilica features Indian Gothic architecture, characterized by curved arches, pointed buttresses, and a blend of European and local elements. One of its notable features is its four bells, imported from Italy in 1901. Despite one of the bells developing cracks over time, it remains an iconic part of the basilica.
The church hosts regular masses and is especially vibrant during Christmas and the Feast of the Assumption on August 15, when it is beautifully illuminated.
