Established in 1820, the construction of the current structure began in 1869 under the guidance of Fr. Antonio Tagliabue of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME). The cathedral was consecrated and opened for divine worship on Christmas Eve of 1875.
The cathedral is renowned for its stunning architecture, including its façade and bell towers, which were completed in 1891. The bells, imported from Italy, are tuned to play various hymns, including "Ave Maria". The interior of the cathedral features a large hall that can accommodate about 500 people, and it houses an imitation of Michelangelo's famous Pietà.
