The State Government Museum in Vellore is located within the premises of the Vellore Fort. Established in 1985, it is the sixth district museum in Tamil Nadu. The museum aims to impart knowledge about the erstwhile North Arcot District (present-day Vellore and Tiruvannamalai) and its historical significance.
The museum houses a wide range of artifacts related to art, archaeology, anthropology, geology, botany, and zoology. Some highlights include a life-size fiberglass model of a Tyrannosaurus rex at the entrance and two 18th-century cannons unearthed from Vellore Fort.
There is also a sculpture garden with stone sculptures, hero stones, inscriptions, and cannon balls. The museum features eight different galleries showcasing historical photographs, stone sculptures, prehistoric artifacts, contemporary art, natural science specimens, bronze artifacts, coins, and anthropological objects.
