Surat Castle
Surat Castle, also known as the Old Fort, is a 16th-century fortress located in Surat, Gujarat. It was built by Sultan Mahmud III of the Gujarat Sultanate between 1540 and 1546 to protect the city from frequent Portuguese attacks. The construction was overseen by Safi Agha, a Turkish soldier who was given the title Khudawand Khan.
The castle is strategically positioned on the banks of the Tapi River, covering approximately 1 acre. It features four large round towers, each 12.2 meters high, with walls 4.1 meters thick, designed to withstand invasions. The main entrance has spiked doors, a common defensive feature in medieval forts.
