Surkotada Indus Valley Civilization
Surkotada is an important archaeological site located in the Rapar Taluka of the Kutch district in Gujarat. It is one of the smaller fortified sites of the Indus Valley Civilization (IVC), covering an area of about 3.5 acres. The site was discovered and excavated by Jagat Pati Joshi of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) between 1964 and 1968.
The excavations at Surkotada have revealed a sequence of three cultural sub-periods within the Harappan chronology, dating from around 2300 BCE to 1700 BCE. The site features a fortified citadel and residential annexe, built with mud bricks, mud lumps, and rubble. The Harappans also had a well-developed drainage system and sanitary arrangements.
One of the most intriguing findings at Surkotada is the presence of horse and ass bones, which has sparked debates about the domestication of horses in the Indian subcontinent during the IVC period.
