Taj Mahal Palace
The Taj Mahal Palace in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, is a grand historical palace built by Sultan Shah Jahan Begum, the ruler of Bhopal, between 1871 and 1884. Originally named Raj Mahal, it was renamed to Taj Mahal by the British Resident at Bhopal, who was impressed by its architecture. The palace is located beside the Taj-ul-Masajid, one of the largest mosques in India.
The palace showcases a blend of Indo-Saracenic architecture, incorporating Hindu, Arabic, British, Mughal, and French influences. It features 120 rooms, a hall of mirrors (Sheesh Mahal), and a savon bhadon pavilion that simulates the effect of rain.
The main entrance is a seven-storied structure, and the palace is kept cool by the winds blowing in from the nearby lakes.
After the partition of India in 1947, Sindhi refugees were allowed to stay in the palace for a few years. Over time, the palace fell into disrepair, but it was declared a state heritage monument by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 2005. Restoration efforts have been ongoing, and there are plans to develop the palace into a heritage hotel.
