Tashiding Monastery
Tashiding Monastery, nestled in the serene landscapes of West Sikkim, is one of the most sacred and holiest monasteries in Sikkim. It belongs to the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is often referred to as the "Heart of Sikkim" due to its religious significance.
Perched on top of a hill between the Rathong Chu and Rangeet River, the monastery offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and the majestic Kanchendzonga peaks. Founded in 1641 by Ngadak Sempa Chenpo Phunshok Rigzing, the monastery has undergone several renovations, including a significant one in 1717 during the reign of the third Chogyal Chakdor Namgyal.
The annual Bumchu Festival, held on the 14th and 15th of the first month of the Tibetan lunar calendar, is a major event at Tashiding Monastery. During this festival, a sacred vase containing holy water is opened, and its water level is believed to predict the future events for Sikkim.
