It is one of the tallest dams in India and the 13th-tallest in the world, standing at a height of 260.5 meters (855 feet). The dam was constructed on the Bhagirathi River and began operations in 2006.
The reservoir created by the dam has a total capacity of 3.54 cubic kilometers (2,870,000 acre-feet) and covers an area of 52 square kilometers (20 square miles). It serves multiple purposes, including hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, and municipal water supply. The dam's hydroelectric power plant has an installed capacity of 1,000 MW, with an additional 1,400 MW variable-speed pumped-storage scheme currently under construction.
