The Adalaj Stepwell
The Adalaj Stepwell, also known as Adalaj ni Vav, is a historic stepwell located in Adalaj, near Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Built in 1498 by Queen Rudabai, the wife of Rana Veer Singh of the Vaghela dynasty, the stepwell is an architectural marvel that reflects Indo-Islamic fusion design. It was constructed to provide water to the semi-arid regions of Gujarat and served as a resting place for travelers and pilgrims.
The five-story deep well features intricate carvings, ornamental pillars, and mythological depictions, including the Kalpavriksha and Ami Khumbor motifs. The stepwell has three entrances leading to an underground octagonal structure, where light and air enter through openings in the ceiling, maintaining a temperature six degrees cooler than outside.
