The Jami Masjid
The Jami Masjid, also known as the Jama Masjid of Champaner, is located in the Panchmahal district of Gujarat, near the town of Godhra. Dating back to the 15th century, it is considered one of the finest mosques in western India.
The mosque is a grand structure with two imposing minarets on either side of the central entrance to the prayer hall. The dome behind the high central screen of the façade is elevated on two extra storeys of open arcades, and the roof just behind this dome is adorned with a beautifully carved slab.
The mosque features seven mehrabs (prayer niches) in the back wall of the main prayer hall, with the central one being the most elaborately decorated. The northern section of the prayer hall is separated by a perforated screen, reserved for women, with an extra entrance provided for them. A pillared corridor surrounds the vast courtyard, opening inside through ogival arches supported by pillars. The eastern porch is particularly remarkable for its intricate carving and jaali work.
