Tholung Monastery
Tholung Monastery, located in North Sikkim, is one of the most sacred monasteries in the region. Situated in the remote upper Dzongu area within the buffer zone of Khangchendzonga National Park, the monastery follows the Nyingmapa school of Tibetan Buddhism.
It was originally constructed in the early 18th century by Chogyal Phuntsog Namgyal II and serves as a repository for rare manuscripts and relics that were safeguarded during the Nepalese invasion of Sikkim. Among its treasures is a metal chorten containing the ashes of an incarnate Lama Latsun Chembo.
Every three years, these artifacts are unveiled to the public during the Kamsil Ceremony, a significant event for devotees. The monastery stands at an altitude of approximately 8,000 feet and requires a challenging trek through dense forests to reach. Due to its restricted location, visitors need an inner line permit to access the site.
