Thotlakonda is an ancient Buddhist site located atop a hill near Bheemunipatnam, about 15 kilometers from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Overlooking the Bay of Bengal, this serene archaeological site was active between the 2nd century BCE and the 2nd century CE, serving as a monastic complex for Buddhist monks.
The site was discovered during an aerial survey conducted by the Indian Navy, leading to excavations that revealed stupas, chaityas, viharas, and other structures indicative of a thriving Buddhist settlement. Thotlakonda was strategically positioned to facilitate maritime trade and the spread of Buddhism to Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.
The presence of rock-cut cisterns suggests that the site was well-equipped to support monastic life. Excavations have uncovered Satavahana dynasty lead coins, Roman silver coins, terracotta tiles, sculptured panels, miniature stupa models, and Buddha footprints, highlighting its historical significance.
The site provides valuable insights into the transoceanic diffusion of Indic culture and Buddhism.
