Tosamaidan

Tosamaidan, located in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir, is a vast and picturesque meadow nestled in the Himalayan mountains, known for its natural beauty and historical importance. The meadow, surrounded by dense forests and deodar trees, stretches about 3 miles long and 1.5 miles wide.

Historically, it was a significant trade and travel route connecting Kashmir Valley with Poonch Valley and western Punjab, guarded by the Loharkot fort during the Lohara dynasty. Notable historical events include invasions by Mahmud of Ghazni and Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh through this route, which was considered the safest and easiest passage to Kashmir from the Punjab region.

In 1964, the region was leased to the Indian Army for use as an artillery firing range, impacting the ecology and local livelihoods. In recent years, the land was returned to the local community, who have been involved in conservation efforts. Tosamaidan remains an important cultural, ecological, and historical site, with scenic mountain views and a rich tapestry of natural and human heritage.
