Tso Kar is a high-altitude salt lake located in the Rupshu Valley of Leh district in Ladakh, India, about 102 to 153 km from Leh city. Known as the "white lake" due to the white salt deposits along its edges, it is part of a wetland complex linked to a nearby freshwater lake, Startsapuk Tso.
Situated at around 4,500 meters elevation, Tso Kar experiences extreme climate conditions with winter temperatures dropping below -40°C and summer temperatures rising above 30°C. The lake covers about 9 square kilometers and is surrounded by stunning mountains including Thugje and Gursan peaks.
It is a Ramsar site recognized for its ecological importance, providing habitat for diverse wildlife including endangered species like the snow leopard, saker falcon, and black-necked crane, important for migratory birds along the Central Asian Flyway. Historically, salt from the lake was collected by the nomadic Changpa people for trade. Tourism is supported by tented camps nearby, attracting visitors interested in nature, birdwatching, and experiencing this remote yet beautiful landscape.
