Udaigiri Caves
The Udayagiri Caves, located near Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh, are a group of twenty rock-cut caves dating back to the Gupta period (4th–5th century CE).
These caves are primarily dedicated to Hindu deities Vishnu and Shiva, with one cave devoted to Jainism. They contain some of the oldest surviving Hindu temples and iconography in India, making them an important archaeological site.
One of the most notable sculptures in the caves is the Varaha Avatar of Vishnu, depicted in Cave 5, where Vishnu, in his boar incarnation, rescues the Earth goddess Bhudevi from the depths of the cosmic ocean.
The caves also feature inscriptions from the reigns of Chandragupta II (c. 375–415 CE) and Kumaragupta I (c. 415–455 CE), making them the only site verifiably associated with a Gupta period monarch.
