Also known as Hastagiri, Attiyuran, and Perarulalan Perumal Temple, it is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the sacred Vishnu temples visited by the Alvars, the poet saints of Vaishnavism. The temple is situated in Vishnu Kanchi, a suburb of Kanchipuram known for its many Vishnu temples.

It is believed that Ramanuja, the great Vaishnava philosopher, resided here. The temple is part of the Mumurtivasam, a trio of sacred temples in Kanchipuram, alongside Ekambareswarar Temple and Kamakshi Amman Temple.
