Varanasi Cricket Stadium
The Varanasi International Cricket Stadium is an under-construction stadium in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, expected to be completed by December 2025. It will have a seating capacity of 30,000 spectators, expandable up to 40,000. The stadium's design is inspired by the spiritual heritage of Varanasi and Lord Shiva, featuring elements such as trident-shaped floodlights, crescent-shaped roof covers, ghat-step-like seating, and a media center shaped like a damaru (a small drum associated with Shiva).
The stadium is being constructed on around 30 acres in the Rajatalab area beside the Ring Road Phase-2, with the Uttar Pradesh government having acquired the land and the construction cost estimated at around ₹330 crore, supported by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The venue will include nine practice wickets, an advanced drainage system, a VIP zone, and sufficient parking. It aims to be a landmark that blends sporting excellence with the cultural and spiritual ethos of Varanasi.
The stadium will be the third international cricket stadium in Uttar Pradesh after those in Kanpur and Lucknow and is expected to boost local economy and cricket development in the region. The foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2023, attended by cricket legends and government officials.
