Vivekananda Setu / Bali Bridge
Vivekananda Setu, also known as Bally Bridge or Willingdon Bridge, is a historic bridge over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. It connects the twin cities of Howrah at Bally and Kolkata at Dakshineswar. The bridge was completed in 1931 and is a multi-span steel truss bridge with a total length of 880 meters (2,887 feet).
The bridge was originally named Willingdon Bridge after the Viceroy of India, Freeman Freeman-Thomas, 1st Marquess of Willingdon. It was later renamed Bally Bridge and eventually Vivekananda Setu in honor of Swami Vivekananda. The bridge was built to provide direct road and rail connectivity between the Calcutta Port and the major railhead at Howrah railway station.
