Zafar Mahal
Zafar Mahal is a historic monument located in the Mehrauli village of South Delhi, Delhi. It was built by Akbar Shah II in 1820 and later expanded by Bahadur Shah Zafar II in 1847. The palace is known for its elegant Mughal architecture, featuring sandstone and marble construction, broad balconies, and distinctive Bengali domes.
The palace grounds house a marble enclosure with intricate jaalis, where several Mughal emperors, including Bahadur Shah I, Shah Alam II, and Akbar Shah II, are buried. An empty grave meant for Bahadur Shah Zafar II remains unfilled, symbolizing his exile to Burma by the British forces.
Despite its historical significance, Zafar Mahal is currently in a state of neglect and requires preservation efforts. The monument is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and is a poignant reminder of the twilight years of the Mughal Empire.
