List of 22 Metropolitan Areas in INDIA

India, with its rapidly urbanizing population and expanding infrastructure, officially classifies certain large urban clusters as Metropolitan Areas.

According to the Constitution of India (Article 243P(c)), a Metropolitan Area is defined as:

"An area having a population of ten lakh (1 million) or more, comprised in one or more districts and consisting of two or more Municipalities or Panchayats or other contiguous areas, specified by the Governor by public notification to be a Metropolitan Area."

  2. Mumbai - Maharashtra    
  3. Kolkata - West Bengal
  4. Chennai - Tamil Nadu    
  5. Bangalore - Karnataka
  6. Hyderabad - Telangana

2. Mumbai, Maharashtra

3. Kolkata, West Bengal

A major cultural and historical hub; includes Howrah and other adjoining municipalities.

4. Chennai, Tamil Nadu

Southern India’s largest industrial and IT center.

5. Bangalore (Bengaluru), Karnataka

Known as the "Silicon Valley of India"; a global technology and innovation hub.

6. Hyderabad, Telangana

A major IT and pharma industry center; includes Secunderabad and adjoining municipalities.

7. Ahmedabad, Gujarat

8. Pune, Maharashtra

9. Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh
