Anakapalli, Andhra Pradesh (AP), India

Anakapalli is a suburb of Visakhapatnam city in Andhra Pradesh, now merged with the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. It is known for having the second largest jaggery (sugarcane product) market in India.

Historically, Anakapalli has been ruled by several dynasties including the Kalinga Empire, Eastern Ganga, Gajapati, Kakatiya, Qutub Shahi, and Vijayanagara rulers. The town lies by the holy Sarada River and served as an important fortified headquarters under the Nawab of Arcot in the mid-18th century.

Anakapalli is rich in historical and cultural heritage with notable Buddhist archaeological sites nearby, such as Sankaram, which includes rock-cut caves, stupas, and relics dating back to the 1st century AD, showing the presence of ancient Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana Buddhism. The town has been a part of India’s freedom struggle with visits from leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
