Eluru

Eluru is a city located in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh and serves as the administrative headquarters of Eluru district, which was carved out of the old West Godavari district in 2022. Historically, Eluru, formerly known as Ellore, has a rich heritage dating back to the second century CE and was part of the ancient Vengi kingdom.
The region was ruled by several powerful dynasties including the Salankayanas, Vishnukundinas, and Eastern Chalukyas, with Vengi (near Eluru) serving as an important capital in Andhra history. Eluru flourished under various empires such as the Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara Empire, and later came under Muslim rule including Qutb Shahi and Mughal empires.
During British colonial times, Eluru was the headquarters of the West Godavari district and a key military and administrative center.
