Nellore, officially known as Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore District, is a coastal district in Andhra Pradesh with headquarters in Nellore city. The district was historically known as Vikrama Simhapuri until the 13th century and has a long history of rule by dynasties such as the Mauryas, Satavahanas, Pallavas, Cholas, Kakatiyas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara Empire, and the Arcot Nawabs.

Nellore was part of the Ashokan empire in the 3rd century BCE and later flourished under various South Indian dynasties. The region is known for its rich cultural heritage, including poetry and Telugu literature, with notable figures like the poet Tikkana hailing from here. During British colonial rule, Nellore was part of the Madras Presidency.

Post-Indian independence, the district became part of Andhra Pradesh following the linguistic reorganization of states in 1956. It played an important role in the state's formation, especially due to the activism of Potti Sriramulu, after whom the district was renamed in 2008.
