Khammam is a historic city and district in the Indian state of Telangana, situated on the banks of the Munneru River, a tributary of the Krishna River. The name "Khammam" is derived from the temple of Lord Narasimha Swamy, located on a hillock called Narasimhaswamy Gutta in the city.
Historically known as "Sthambadri" due to this pillar-like rock formation, Khammam has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence, including Paleolithic and megalithic remains found in the region. Khammam town was originally part of the larger Warangal district until October 1, 1953, when it became a separate district with Khammam as the headquarters.
It was further expanded by merging nearby taluks, and on November 1, 1956, it became part of Andhra Pradesh after the dissolution of Hyderabad state. However, in 2014, Khammam became part of the newly formed state of Telangana. The district has a strong legacy in India’s freedom movement and has produced notable leaders involved in the struggle.
