Achenkovil

Achenkovil is a small village located in the Kollam district of Kerala, situated deep within the Western Ghats forest region. It is well known for its natural beauty and the Achankovil River that flows through this area. Achenkovil holds significant religious importance due to the Achankovil Sastha Temple, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, which is one of the five major Shasta temples in Kerala.

The temple is unique because the idol of Lord Ayyappa is depicted as a householder with his two wives and is believed to have been consecrated by Sage Parasurama. This temple is also famous for its reputed ability to cure poisonous snake bites using sandalwood paste and holy water held by the deity's idol. The village is a popular pilgrimage site, especially during the Sabarimala season, attracting devotees from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Besides its spiritual significance, the region is part of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve, featuring rich biodiversity, lush forests, and scenic waterfalls like Manalar and Kumbhavurutty falls.

The Achankovil River, flowing through Kollam and neighboring districts, supports fertile agricultural lands and numerous ancient temples along its banks, reflecting the area's cultural heritage and connection to Lord Ayyappa lore.
