Akola Fort
Akola Fort, also known as Asadgad, is a historic fort located in Akola district, Maharashtra. The original fortification was built with mud by Akol Singh and later fortified and rebuilt in stone in 1697 CE by Asad Khan during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, from whom the fort takes its name.
The fort played an important role in regional defense and witnessed significant events during the Second Anglo-Maratha War, notably serving as Arthur Wellesleyโs camp before the Battle of Argaon in 1803. The British demolished parts of the fort around 1870 to prevent future military use.
Architecturally, the fort features bastions, gates with inscriptions, an Eidgah for Muslim prayers, and the Raj Rajeshwar Mandir temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The fort reflects a blend of Mughal and regional styles, with solid stone construction, strategic design, and historical inscriptions marking different periods of its development and use.
