Alamparai Fort, located near Kadappakkam in Tamil Nadu about 50 kilometers from Mamallapuram, is a 17th-century fort built during the Mughal era under Aurangzeb. It served as a significant coastal defense and trading port, with a dockyard extending 100 meters into the sea from which goods like zari cloth, salt, and ghee were exported.
The fort came under the rule of Nawab Dost Ali Khan of Arcot in the 18th century and was later given to the French in recognition of their support during regional conflicts. The British captured and demolished much of the fort around 1760, and it was further damaged by the 2004 tsunami, leaving it largely in ruins today.
Architecturally, the fort combined European and Indian elements with tall brick walls, watchtowers, mosques, granaries, and ammunition storage, reflecting its dual role as a military stronghold and commercial hub. Despite its dilapidated state, it offers scenic views of the Bay of Bengal and remains an important cultural and historical landmark in Tamil Nadu.
