All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Madurai (AIIMS Madurai), located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is a premier public autonomous medical institution established in 2020 under the AIIMS Act as an Institute of National Importance to provide affordable tertiary healthcare, advanced medical education, and cutting-edge research.
Currently operating from a temporary campus at Government Medical College in Ramanathapuram, about 50 km from Madurai city center, while its permanent 222-acre site develops in Thoppur near Austinpatti Post, it plans a 750-bed hospital with super-specialty departments, emergency/trauma units, ICUs, OPD for 1,500 patients daily, and facilities like hostels, auditorium, guest house, and night shelter.
Funded partly by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with a loan signed in 2022, AIIMS Madurai addresses southern India's healthcare gaps through undergraduate MBBS via INI-CET, postgraduate programs, nursing courses, and research in life sciences and biotechnology, led by Executive Director Dr. M. Hanumantha Rao.
