Amethi Fort, located in Amethi (now known as Chatrapati Sahuji Mahraj Nagar) in Uttar Pradesh, has a rich history tied to the Bandhalgoti Rajput rulers who originally resided in Raipur Phulwari.
The old fort at Raipur Phulwari was destroyed in the mid-18th century by Safdar Jang after a siege, but the ruling family managed to regain their estate. The fort seen today was built by the Bandhalgoti Rajas near Ram Nagar, which later became the political center. Amethi grew from a cluster of small villages into a flourishing town, especially after the railway station was established in 1898.
The area surrounding the fort is notable for historical sites like the Hanumangarhi temple and the tomb of poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. The fort and Amethi’s legacy are closely linked to the region’s political and cultural history, including its association with prominent leaders and its role during the Indian freedom movement.
