Apsarasas Kangri
Apsarasas Kangri is a towering mountain in the Siachen subrange of the Karakoram range located near Leh in Ladakh. It reaches an elevation of about 7,245 meters (23,770 feet), making it one of the highest peaks in the region and the 96th highest mountain globally. The mountain lies in a geopolitically sensitive area on the border between Indian-controlled Ladakh and the Chinese-controlled Xinjiang region.
The massif includes at least three main summits called Apsarasas Kangri I, II, and III, spread over roughly 5 kilometers. Of these, only the western peak, Apsarasas Kangri I, has been climbed, with the first ascent made in 1976 by a Japanese team and subsequent ascents by Indian Army expeditions.
The other summits remain unclimbed and are considered virgin peaks. The name "Apsarasas" derives from local mythology, roughly meaning "place of the fairies." The mountain's remote and challenging terrain attracts experienced mountaineers, and the area showcases dramatic glacial and high-altitude landscapes characteristic of the Karakoram region. Due to the location's military sensitivity and harsh conditions, access and climbing are highly regulated. This peak is part of a broader rugged wilderness near the Siachen Glacier and Leh, appealing to adventure seekers and mountaineers interested in exploring one of the world’s less-trodden high-altitude mountains.
