Arikamedu is an ancient archaeological site located in the Ariyankuppam commune, near Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry), in the state of Tamil Nadu.
It is about 4 kilometers from the capital city of Puducherry and is situated on the southeastern coast of India. Arikamedu is known for its historical significance as a major trading port between India and the Roman Empire during the 1st century BCE to the 8th century CE.
The site was accidentally discovered during an archaeological excavation in 1945 by Sir Mortimer Wheeler and Jean-Marie Casal. Excavations have revealed a wealth of artifacts, including Roman lamps, glassware, amphorae, and Indo-Pacific beads.
The site is believed to have been an Indo-Roman trading city and is considered one of the earliest-known bead-making sites in the Indo-Pacific region. The name "Arikamedu" is derived from the Tamil word "arrukumedu," meaning "mound of ruins" or "mound on a riverbank".
