Attur Fort, located in Salem district, Tamil Nadu, was built in the 17th century by Lakshmana Nayakan, a chieftain from the Gatti Mudaliar dynasty under the Madurai Nayaks. Situated on the banks of the Vashista River, the fort is square-shaped with bastions, batteries, and bomb-proof chambers.
It served as a strategic military fortification and arms depot, playing a role in the conflicts involving Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and the British East India Company. After Tipu Sultan's defeat, the fort was used by the British as a garrison and ordnance station until 1854, after which it was abandoned.
Today, the fort is under the care of the Archaeological Department of Tamil Nadu, although parts of it are dilapidated and encroached upon. It remains a significant historic monument reflecting the region’s turbulent history and architectural heritage.
