The Barabar Caves are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, dating back to the Maurya Empire (322-185 BCE). Located in the Makhdumpur region of Jehanabad district, Bihar, these caves are situated on the twin hills of Barabar and Nagarjuni. The caves were primarily used by ascetics from the Ajivika sect, a contemporary of both Buddhism and Jainism.
Some notable caves include the Lomas Rishi, Sudama, Karan Chaupar, and Visvakarma caves. The Lomas Rishi cave is particularly famous for its arch-like facade that imitates contemporary timber architecture.
The caves are known for their highly polished internal surfaces and special echo effects, where sounds can last for up to three seconds.
