Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, covers about 245 square kilometers of tropical dry deciduous forest. Established in 1976, it is named after the twin forest villages Bar and Nawapara within the sanctuary.
The sanctuary features undulating terrain with low and high hillocks, and is rich in rivers and streams, including the Jonk and Balamdehi rivers. Its lush forests are home to diverse wildlife such as tigers, leopards, sloth bears, Indian bison (gaur), chital, sambhar deer, nilgai, blackbuck, jackals, and several species of birds including parrots, peafowls, and vultures.
The sanctuary offers a rewarding experience for wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers, with both forest drives and walking trails available. It is accessible by road via Raipur and Mahasamund, with the best visiting period from November to June.
