Bhamer Dhule

Bhamer, located in Sakri tehsil of Dhule district in Maharashtra, is a village steeped in history and surrounded by rugged beauty. Its most striking feature is the Bhamer Fort, perched atop a hill and known for its unique underground architecture.

Unlike typical forts, Bhamer’s structures are carved into the escarpments of the hill, forming a network of caves that once served as monk dwellings, fort offices, and even dungeons. These caves, locally referred to as Gavali Raja’s houses, vary in design—some are plain and unfinished, while others feature pillars, fluted doorposts, and defaced sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras, hinting at the region’s spiritual past.

The fort itself is surrounded by ruins of gateways, towers, and cisterns, with remnants of a mosque and a Hemadpanti-style reservoir nearby. Historically, Bhamer was a fortified town, possibly destroyed during a rebellion in 1736, and later captured by the British in 1818. Though it never regained its former glory, the site remains a fascinating blend of natural and man-made elements.

The ascent to the fort is relatively easy, and the panoramic views from the top are breathtaking, especially during the cooler months from October to February.
