When news of uprisings in nearby regions reached Bhareh, Raja Roop Singh declared war against the British, making the fort a hub of revolutionary activity. Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi visited Bhareh to rally support and strategize with local rulers against the British.
The fort witnessed fierce battles, including the British using artillery from boats to bombard it. Although much of the fort lies in ruins today due to destruction during the rebellion, it remains a symbol of bravery and freedom struggle in the region. The fort overlooks the confluence of the Chambal and Yamuna rivers, adding to its strategic and scenic importance.
