Bhimgarh Fort
Bhimgarh Fort in Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir, is an ancient fort originally built of clay by Raja Bhimdev Rasyal in the 8th century, later reconstructed in stone by heirs of Raja Rishipal Rana. It sits atop a 150-meter high hillock overlooking the Anji River and served as a shelter for the royal family during emergencies.
The fort was significantly renovated starting in 1817 under Maharaja Gulab Singh, including the addition of a stone wall and new entrance to strengthen its defenses, with the efforts led by Diwan Amir Chand and supported by the famed Dogra General Zorawar Singh. The architecture is a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal styles, featuring a stone entrance gate inscribed with Rajasthani writings, loopholes for archers, a temple dedicated to Bhim Devta and Arjun, rooms used as armory and treasury, a pond, and a baradari with twelve doors offering scenic views, including of the Chenab River.
The fort was once used by Dogra rulers as an armory and treasury before those were relocated. In modern times, it was handed over to the Jammu and Kashmir State Archaeology Department in 1989 and renovated in 1990 by the Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. Despite earthquakes and some neglect, it remains a significant historical landmark, reflecting the region's rich heritage and military history.
