Bhitarkanika National Park, located in Kendrapara district of Odisha, covers an area of about 145 square kilometers and is part of the larger Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary which spans 672 square kilometers. Established in 1998 and designated as a Ramsar site in 2002, it is renowned for its rich mangrove forests, estuaries, and wetlands formed by the Brahmani, Baitarani, Dhamra, and Pathsala rivers.
The park hosts India’s second-largest mangrove ecosystem and is home to a significant population of saltwater crocodiles, along with other wildlife like Indian pythons, king cobras, and over 215 bird species including migratory birds. Its eastern boundary is marked by Gahirmatha Beach, the largest nesting site of the Olive Ridley sea turtles. The sanctuary plays a crucial role in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and supports a vibrant ecosystem unique to the tropical intertidal region near the Bay of Bengal.
