Bhujio, located in the Kachchh district of Gujarat, is home to the historic Bhujia Fort, also known as Bhujiya Fort. This fort sits atop Bhujia Hill, overlooking the town of Bhuj. Constructed between 1715 and 1741 AD, the fort was built under the rule of Rao Godji I and later completed by his son, Maharao Deshalji I.
It was originally designed as a defensive structure to protect the city from invasions. Over the years, Bhujia Fort witnessed several battles, including conflicts with Mughal forces and Sindhi raiders. One of the most notable events in its history occurred when a group of Naga Bawas played a crucial role in defending the fort against an invasion by Sher Buland Khan, the Mughal Viceroy of Gujarat.
Since then, the Naga Bawas have been honored in a procession held on Nag Panchami. The fort remained under British control after 1819 and later housed the Indian Army until 2001. Today, Bhujia Fort stands partially in ruins, but restoration efforts are underway to preserve its historical significance.
Visitors can explore its gates, scattered buildings, and the Bhujang Nag Temple, which is dedicated to the snake god Bhujanga. The temple holds religious importance, especially during the Nag Panchami festival. The fort offers a panoramic view of Bhuj town, making it a popular spot for nature lovers and history enthusiasts.
