Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is located about 30 kilometers from Almora in Uttarakhand and was established in 1988 to conserve the Central Himalayan broadleaf oak forests. It spans approximately 45 square kilometers at altitudes ranging from 900 to 2,500 meters, featuring dense oak, rhododendron, and pine forests.
The sanctuary is home to diverse wildlife, including leopards, Himalayan bears, barking deer, musk deer, langurs, porcupines, flying squirrels, and over 200 species of birds such as monal pheasants and Himalayan woodpeckers. Known for its tranquil environment and panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi and Trisul, Binsar also offers hiking trails and rich biodiversity that attract nature lovers, bird watchers, and trekkers seeking a peaceful retreat in the mountains.
Historically, it served as the summer capital of the Chand kings who ruled the Kumaon region.
