Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium (Hockey)

The Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium, located in Rourkela, Sundargarh district of Odisha, is the largest fully seated hockey stadium in the world with a seating capacity of 20,011. Named after the tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda, the stadium was constructed specifically for the 2023 Men's FIH Hockey World Cup, which it co-hosted with Bhubaneswar.

The stadium was built remarkably fast—in just 15 months—under the supervision of the Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation with L&T Construction leading the design and construction. It features two world-class FIH-approved AstroTurf hockey fields, modern amenities including gymnasiums, dedicated facilities for players, and facilities ensuring easy accessibility for people with disabilities. The stadium also includes a World Cup Village with 225 rooms and ample parking.

Its design emphasizes unobstructed views from every seat, green practices like energy-efficient lighting, and the promotion of hockey culture, especially since Sundargarh is known as a hockey heartland producing many international players. Inaugurated by Odisha's Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on January 5, 2023, the stadium has become an architectural marvel and a symbol of Odisha’s commitment to sports excellence and inclusivity, representing a major milestone in Indian hockey infrastructure.
