The Changthang Cold Desert Wildlife Sanctuary is a high-altitude protected area situated in the Ladakhi region of the Changthang plateau within Leh district, Ladakh. Spanning around 4,000 square kilometers, it is known for its cold desert environment characterized by vast plateaus, deep gorges, and numerous lakes and marshes, with elevations ranging from about 14,000 to 19,000 feet.
This sanctuary is especially important for its population of rare and endangered species such as the snow leopard, Tibetan wild ass (Kiang), black-necked crane, Tibetan wolf, wild yak, Tibetan gazelle, and blue sheep.
The sanctuary also supports a variety of migratory waterbirds, including about 44 species, and is home to roughly 200 species of wild plants that sustain local herbivores. The sanctuary is accessible from Leh and is particularly recommended for visitation during the warmer months from May to December, when wildlife viewing and the landscape's natural beauty are at their peak.
