Chari-Dhand Wetland Conservation Reserve, situated on the edge of the arid Banni grasslands and the marshy salt flats of the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, is a unique ecological haven. This seasonal desert wetland spans approximately 80 square kilometers and transforms into a vibrant ecosystem during the monsoon season, receiving water from north-flowing rivers and surrounding hills.
The name "Chari-Dhand" derives from local Kutchi language, where "Chari" means salty and "Dhand" refers to shallow wetlands.
The reserve is a paradise for bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts, attracting nearly two lakh birds, including migratory and endangered species such as Dalmatian Pelicans, Oriental Darters, and Black-necked Storks.
Thousands of flamingos, painted storks, spoonbills, and raptors also flock to this area, making it a potential Ramsar Convention site due to its rich biodiversity. Beyond birds, the wetland is home to desert wildlife like chinkaras, wolves, caracals, and desert foxes.
